Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said that the officers in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have offered to forego a day's salary to contribute to the kitty for drought response.

Speaking on Friday during the launching of the National Steering Committee on Drought Response, Gachagua also appealed to Kenyans of good will to contribute towards the kitty.

The second in command said that a paybill number for the kitty will be launched soon, where Kenyans can deposit the funds.

“We appeal to Kenyans of good will to contribute a percentage of their salaries to a paybill number that will be established soon. Already, our men and women in the Kenya Defense Forces have offered to forego one day’s salary to contribute to the response kitty,” Gachagua stated.

The DP further urged Kenyans in food surplus counties to make their contributions through the offices of governors and respective county commissioners, who will work with the steering committee.

President William Ruto on Monday, November 21, established the steering committee on drought in order to deal with the ravaging effects of drought in the nation.

The Head of State appointed Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa as the chairman of the committee, which will be reporting to the Deputy President.

The committee will collaborate with national and county governments to strengthen the national capacity for resilient recovery and protect development gains from recurrent drought.

It will serve for a period of year since its establishment by the President.
