The official governance assessment has been scheduled for June, however, the team will be undertaking the pre-assessment work starting this month.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced the commencement of the Governance Diagnostic Assessment in Kenya.

Speaking during a meeting with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Monday, March 3, IMF's Deputy Division Chief Rebecca Sparkman revealed that an assessment would be done on government offices and policies that affected the macroeconomy of the country.

One of the institutions that will undergo the assessment is the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). At CBK, the IMF will analyze its operations and governance.

Additionally, the 11-member team is also expected to engage with the Council of Governors.

"The parameters will be defined by Kenya's situation. Not every governance mission is the same because it depends on how the government is set up and the areas we will be looking at," she stated.

"We know about the devolved system of governance, and this is a critical area that we will ensure that we look into. We will be meeting with multiple government offices as well as private sector, civil society and international partners."

Issues and Policies

The IMF official indicated that the assessment was mainly to assess corruption vulnerabilities in government offices.

Consequently, the team will focus on fiscal governance, expenditure policies of the country and tax policies - which include various taxes implemented by the government.

Public Finance Management and revenue administration by KRA will also be assessed.

The official governance assessment has been scheduled for June. However, the team will be undertaking the groundwork, including requesting information from government offices starting this month.

"At the end of the mission, we will be providing some type of draft of the findings and recommendations. The recommendations will be prioritised by the state function and sequenced over the medium term," she stated.
