“Kenyans are advised to take advantage of the extension to file all their returns and pay any taxes that are due before the expiry of the date as specified."

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has extended the deadline for filing tax returns for four more days up to July 5, 2025.

In a statement on Tuesday, July 1, KRA announced that it has extended the deadline after several Kenyans encountered technical issues, which prevented some of them from submitting their returns on time.

“Due to the high volume of taxpayers attempting to file their returns on 30th June, 2025, the system experienced technical difficulties which disrupted the normal functioning of the return filing and payment services, preventing a number of taxpayers from submitting their returns on time.

“Cognisant of the challenges faced by taxpayers during the period and taking into account the provisions of Section 89 (5a)(b) of the Tax Procedures Act, KRA assures the public that we will undertake to waive any interest or penalties that may accrue due to late filing of the end year returns for the year of income ending 31st December, 2024, provided that such returns are filed by 5th July, 2025,” KRA stated.

The authority called on members of the public to take advantage of the extension and file their returns.

“Kenyans are advised to take advantage of the extension to file all their returns and pay any taxes that are due before the expiry of the date as specified,” KRA added.

On Monday, the taxman extended the deadline by 24 hours, giving taxpayers until the end of July 1 to file and pay their returns.

“We have opened a service lane! There is a 24-hour extension up to tomorrow, 1st July 2025, midnight to file and pay your returns,” KRA said in the statement.

The decision followed numerous reports from taxpayers who were unable to access the iTax portal for several hours on Monday, as the system struggled to handle the overwhelming traffic on the final day of filing.
