2025 is set to be characterised by major political developments in the country and the region.

The most notable event Kenyans will be keeping an eye on is the African Union Commission election in February where former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is contesting for the chairperson’s seat.

Here is a breakdown of political events to watch out for:

AUC Elections

Member States of the African Union are set to vote in February 2025 to pick the next AUC chairperson.

Raila, whose candidature had been sponsored by Kenya, is seeking to replace Moussa Faki whose term has come to an end.

The former Prime Minister is battling it out with his main challenger Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti. Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar is also contending for the position.

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission is the Chief Executive Officer, Legal Representative of the Union and the Accounting Officer of the Union,” the AU explained.

“The Chairperson of the Commission is a transformative leadership role responsible for driving the performance of the AU Commission in delivering the continental vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.”

Rigathi Gachagua Declaration

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is expected to announce the way forward for his political supporters in January following his impeachment.

During a church service in November, the former DP revealed that he was holding wide consultations with various stakeholders from the mountain.

According to Gachagua, the declaration will give a clear way forward on the direction for the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections.

Insiders believe that the impeached DP will be joining forces with some opposition leaders such as former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa among others.

“This January, I will tell you what we have agreed and it is good that I have said that my friend the President did well in bringing on this political fight with the people of the mountain as we have now known him,’’ he stated.

''Next year, the political movement that will come out of Mt Kenya region will make the 2002 movement look like a joke.”

Additionally, Kenyans will be keeping an eye on the progress of the petition challenging his impeachment.

Finance Bill 2025

The Finance Bill 2025 is expected to gain traction among Kenyans following the events that were witnessed in the country during the debate and financing of the 2024 bill.

Most importantly, Kenyans will be keen on the tax proposals being made by the government to fund the 2025/2026 budget.

As revealed by Treasury CS John Mbadi, the bill will be ready by April and will be presented to the Cabinet before April 18, 2025.

Mbadi will then submit the bill to the National Assembly by April 29, 2025, in readiness for debate and public participation.
