In the exercise, the IMF will also examine and expose corruption vulnerabilities in the institutions.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has revealed that the government has formally requested a governance and corruption diagnostic from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Speaking during a KRA event on Monday, October 7, Mudavadi noted that he officially signed the request following consultations held with President William Ruto.

The Prime CS detailed that the exercise will be conducted on all government institutions including the KRA.

As planned, the diagnostic by the IMF will reveal major strengths and weaknesses in the governance of the institutions. IMF will also examine and expose corruption vulnerabilities in the institutions.

Additionally, the financial institution will be making recommendations on how the government can seal the loopholes of governance and corruption in the institutions.

Nonetheless, Musalia maintained that the request for the exercise was done voluntarily, contrary to reports that Kenya was facing pressure from Western countries over the same.

“On our own volution. We have requested for governance and corruption diagnostic and I signed off that request on behalf of the government of Kenya,” he stated.

The exact date when the exercise will begin is yet to be known.

The IMF is one of the major financial lenders for Kenya. On most occasions, Kenya has relied on funding from the global institution to meet its budget deficits.

Currently, the government and IMF are in talks over a loan facility programme. Already, the IMF sent a team to assess Kenya with a detailed report expected in the coming weeks.

In June 2024, the IMF revealed that Kenya was set to benefit from a loan programme amounting to Ksh460 billion.
