Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga has called off the Kamukunji protest rally that was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 12 afternoon.
Addressing the media at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation, Raila stated that he made the decision to protect the people and loss of lives.
“In order to protect our people and avert more injury and loss of lives, we have taken the strategic decision not to proceed with the rally at Kamukunji grounds this afternoon, in any case, the police have made the point,” said Raila.
The opposition chief claimed that he received an intelligence report on Tuesday night that Kenya Kwanza planned to ferry armed goons to disrupt the Kamukunji rally.
“Late last night we received intelligence of a heinous plan by Kenya Kwanza to ferry armed goons who will attack peaceful attendees of our rally in Kamukunji. These goons had express orders to shoot directly in the crowd while enjoying police protection,” Raila stated.

He went on to allege that the Azimio crew that was sent to set up a stage at Kamukunji grounds were attacked on Wednesday morning, their equipment destroyed and some arrested.
“Early this morning our crew who had been sent to set up a stage at Kamukunji were attacked and their equipment damaged and some were arrested,” Raila added.
His announcement comes as several demonstrations across the country including, Kisii, Nyamira, Nyeri, Mombasa, Kisumu, Migori, Machakos and some parts of the Western region.
The Nairobi Expressway barriers in Mlolongo in Machakos County were vandalized forcing Mojo Expressway, the company that is managing the expressway, to temporarily close the road.
The company advised motorists to seek alternative entry and exit routes.
