The first Mazinga Day celebrations will be held on Thursday, October 10.

Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has unveiled the nationwide programme for the first Mazinga Day celebrations, which will be held on Thursday, October 10.

In a notice issued Tuesday, October 8, Duale revealed that there would be three activities for the day centring around environmental conservation.

For starters, Kenyans were urged to participate in cleaning exercises at homes, roads, parks and other public areas.

"To celebrate Mazingira Day, all Kenyans are therefore encouraged to participate in tree planting in line with the government's efforts towards accelerating landscape and ecosystem restoration by growing 15 Billion trees by 2032 which will also be instrumental in addressing the effects of climate change," read the statement in part.

"These can be done in homes, schools and other available spaces."

On the other hand, Duale noted that there will be forums where Kenyand can discuss environmental issues such as pollution and waste management.

Meanwhile, the CS explained that the national holiday was important for the country especially owing to the effects of climate change that have been witnessed in recent years.

He reiterated that the holiday was an opportunity to undertake measures that will mitigate climate change now and in the future.

"Mazingira Day is a crucial opportunity to accelerate environmental protection and raise awareness of the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. It calls for urgent meaningful actions from both government and citizens to ensure prosperity and sustainability for present and future generations," the CS added.

"Aligned with the National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme, Mazingira Day supports the goal of restoring 10.6 million hectares of degraded land by planting 15 billion trees by the year 2032, through a whole of Government and Society approach.
