The KANU chairman has landed a new job.

KANU chairman Gideon Moi has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Commonwealth Expert Team (CET) that will observe upcoming general elections in Botswana.

In statement on Friday, October 25, KANU Director of Communications Manasse Nyainda stated that Moi will lead a distinguished group of eminent persons drawn from across the Commonwealth during the elections slated for October 30.

"Gideon Moi will lead a distinguished group of five other eminent persons drawn from across the Commonwealth with expertise in politics, elections, media, and civil society.

"During their mission in Botswana, the team will engage with crucial electoral stakeholders, including the electoral management body, political parties, civil society organizations, media representatives, the diplomatic community, and other international and domestic observers," Nyainda stated.

He added that the scope of the election observation will include the evaluation of pre-election preparatory activities in different provinces across the country as well as monitoring of the election day procedures.

Upon the conclusion of the election observation, the Gideon Moi-led team will then compile and release a final report.

The report will evaluate whether the electoral process was conducted in line with the country's democratic commitments.

"On concluding their work, the CET will compile and release a final report detailing their observations after considering all aspects of the electoral process. The report will assess whether the election was conducted in accordance with Botswana’s democratic commitments," Nyainda explained.

During the deployment of the team, Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland emphasised the organisation’s steadfast dedication to democracy and human rights, highlighting that resilient societies are grounded in electoral processes that are free, fair, and inclusive.
