The United States Department of Defense has announced the repatriation of Mohammed Abdul Malik Bajabu from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.
In a statement dated Tuesday, December 17, the US government explained that the detainee was being handed over to the Kenyan government following the move to close the Guantanamo Bay facility.
The US Department of Defense added that a review done in 2021 also established that it was no longer necessary to hold the Kenyan man there.
"On Dec. 27, 2021, the Periodic Review Board (PRB) process determined that continued law of war detention of Mohammed Abdul Malik Bajabu (ISN 10025) was no longer necessary to protect against a continuing significant threat to the national security of the United States. The PRB recommended that Bajabu be transferred subject to appropriate security assurances," read the statement in part.

The detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba is operated by the US military and was used to hold terror suspects.
The facility has been named over the years to be one of the toughest prisons in the world.
Bajabu was arrested and detained in 2007, He was accused of being a facilitator for Al-Qaeda in East Africa.
"Today, 29 detainees remain at Guantanamo Bay: 15 are eligible for transfer; 3 are eligible for a Periodic Review Board; 7 are involved in the military commissions process; and 4 detainees have been convicted and sentenced by military commissions." the US Department of Defence added.
