At least eight people have been confirmed dead in a road accident that occurred Friday morning in the Salama area, Makueni county along the Mombasa- Nairobi Highway.
The accident involved a matatu shuttle and a lorry that collided head-on.
The matatu owned by Naekana Sacco was travelling from Loitoktok to Nairobi while the lorry was heading to Mombasa when the tragic accident occurred.
Makueni Police Commander Barbanas Ng’eno confirmed the accident to a local publication and said those who sustained injuries were rushed to Kilungu sub-county hospital.
Reports say four people were critically injured.

"Further investigations into the accident have commenced to establish finer details of what transpired," Ng'eno said.
The wreckage of the vehicles involved in the accident was towed to Salama Police Station.
The accident happened less than 24 hours after 12 people died in an accident involving a shuttle and a lorry along the same Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
The 12 died when their shuttle matatu collided with a truck in the Ndii area of Voi in Taita Taveta.
The passenger vehicle was headed towards Mombasa and the truck was heading towards Nairobi. The accident occurred at 4.20 pm.
Voi OCPD Bernstein Shari said the injured were rushed to Moi Referral Hospital in Voi for treatment.
Shari said the passenger shuttle belongs to Chania Genesis company and it collided head-on with a truck carrying goods to Nairobi from Mombasa.
