Gideon Moi Secretly Coronated by Kalenjin Elders at Night Event

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has been installed as a Kalenjin elder by Talai elders in Nandi County.

The secret ceremony kicked off at 4 am and reportedly took three hours.

The ceremony was done secretly, as a similar event that was scheduled for early January 2021, was postponed after rowdy youth blocked Senator Mo from accessing the home of one of the elders.

In a bid to ensure the event was not disrupted, Gideon Moi used discrete transportation to access the coronation venue.

The installation ceremony was overseen by elder Christopher Koyogi who noted that Senator Moi is now the leader of the Kalenjin community and has power similar to those given to his late father over 60 years ago.

Following his installation, Senator Moi was cleared to seek the top seat in the country.

Meanwhile, Moi’s installation comes hot in the heels of Myoot elders endorsing Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.

Speaking after endorsing DP Ruto, Myoot Council of Elders Chairman Benjamin Kitur noted that the decision to endorse DP was out of merit, as he has all the required traits to lead the community.

“There is no behind-the-scenes lobbying and the decision is arrived at after a lengthy consultation within the council. We deliberated on this matter the entire Sunday night and the 10 of us reached a consensus that Gideon should wait.

“There has been push and pull since 2016 on who should be the Kalenjin spokesperson. As community elders, we have taken this matter seriously and settled on DP Ruto, since he is capable of uniting us with other Kenyans and contesting for the presidency,” Kitur said.
