The burial ceremony of marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum has been rescheduled from Saturday February 24, 2024 to Friday, February 23, 2024.
The family spokesperson while addressing members of the press said the burial was moved to accommodate President William Ruto’s calendar.
According to the spokesperson, the Head of State will attend Kiptum’s burial on Friday before flying out to Namibia.
“The burial of Kelvin Kiptum will be a state function, the President will be in attendance on Friday. The burial was moved from Saturday, February 24 as we had communicated to Friday 23 because the President will be available on Friday before going to Namibia,” she stated.
Kiptum passed away on February 11 together with his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana after being involved in a grisly road accident in the Kaptagat area along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine Road.

The world record holder died at the age of 24 years. Kiptum’s world record marathon time of 2:00:35 set in the Chicago Marathon in October 2023 was ratified just days ago by World Athletics.
President Ruto mourned Kiptum as a rising star who broke barriers to secure a marathon record.
“He was only 24 yet, as a hero, triumphed in Valencia, Chicago, London and in other top competitions. His mental strength and discipline were unmatched. Kiptum was our future.
“An extraordinary sportsman has left an extraordinary mark in the globe. Our thoughts are with the family and the sporting fraternity. Rest In Peace,” Ruto stated.
The President on Thursday last week directed experts to construct a three-bedroom house for the marathoner’s family before he is laid to rest.
According to photos shared online, the houses whose construction was kickstarted on Friday is on the brink of completion.
