The Senate on Wednesday, August 14 rejected the motion to form a select committee to probe charges against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
The motion which was tabled by Senate Majority Whip Boni Khalalwe has proposed a committee comprised of Hillary Sigei, Abdul Haji, Karen Nyamu, Wahome Wamainga, David Wafula, Gloria Orwoba, Issa Juma, Eddy Oketch, Shakila Abdalla, Beth Mwandeti and Beatrice Akinyi to investigate the charges fronted against governor Mwangaza.
Speaking after Senators rejected the formation of the 11-member committee, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi said Governor Mwangaza will now face the whole house.
“The motion having been negatived the route of a special committee is abandoned and that now implies that the Senate will investigate the proposed removal from office by Impeachment of Hon. Kawira Mwangaza in plenary pursuant to Section 33 (3a) of the County Governments Act and Standing Order 80 (1b),” said Kingi.
The Senate Speaker directed the clerk of the Senate to issue invitations to the parties involved to appear before the house.

Kingi said the parties should file responses with the Office of the Clerk of the Senate by Saturday, August 17, 2024, by 5 pm.
He also directed the clerk to circulate the documents received from the parties including the plenary hearing programme to all Senators by Sunday, August 18, 2024.
“The Senate shall investigate the matter in plenary on Monday the 19th of August and Tuesday the 20th of August 2024,” Kingi remarked.
Governor Mwangaza was impeached on Thursday, August 8 after 49 out of 69 MCAs voted in favor of a motion seeking her removal from office while 17 voted no.
The Meru Governor is being accused of gross violations of the constitution, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.
