Kenya has been elected to sit on the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'oei made the announcement through a statement on his X account on Wednesday, November 10. 

The PS explained that the election of Kenya was a major milestone adding that it would put the country on the global map.

"I am pleased to announce Kenya’s successful election to the United Nations Human Rights Council during elections held today in New York," he announced.

Kenya's Permanent Representative echoed his sentiments to the UN who expressed that the move would help Kenya advocate and promote human rights protection all over the world.

"Today Ambassador Ekitele Lokaale joined members of the UN General Assembly in the election of 18 members to the UNHRC. Kenya officially secured a seat on the Council," read the statement in part.

"The overwhelming support received demonstrates the trust & confidence the international community has bestowed upon Kenya.

Following Kenya's election to the council, the country will be participating in discussions on thematic human rights issues that attract global attention at the UN office in Geneva.

The council is also mandated to authorise investigations into alleged war crimes committed in member states.
