The Ministry of Health has disclosed that the government will disburse Ksh4.5 billion to settle claims owed to healthcare facilities.

In a statement on Tuesday, October 15, the Ministry noted that Ksh1.5 billion will be disbursed this week and the remainder be released next week.

"The government will disburse Ksh1.5 billion this week to settle claims owed to healthcare facilities, with an additional Ksh3 billion to be cleared next week, bringing the total to Ksh4.5 billion," MoH stated.

Principal Secretary for Medical Services Harry Kimtai affirmed that all claims owed by the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) will be fully paid.

“We are optimistic that we will settle all the claims,” he remarked.

According to the Ministry of Health, a committee will be established to oversee the payment process to ensure transparency.

Kimtai disclosed that NHIF liabilities will now fall under the Social Health Authority (SHA), which has implemented a fully digitised claims portal.

He stated that the system enabled real-time monitoring, and as of Monday, October 14, over Ksh100 million worth of claims had been recorded.

The PS promised that all outstanding claims will be settled within 90 days.

Additionally, Kimtai intimated that SHA is digitising health records and will distribute tablets to healthcare workers, something he said will transform Kenya's healthcare system.

He highlighted the adoption of e-contracting for healthcare facilities and urged facilities to establish customer service desks to help Kenyans register with SHA.

SHA was rolled out on October 1, 2024, to replace the defunct NHIF.
