President William Ruto spoke with the newly-elected Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam to offer his congratulations on the election victory. 

In a statement on Tuesday, November 26, Ruto emphasized the long-standing diplomatic relationship between the two nations, expressing confidence that the ties would continue to grow stronger. 

"I have had a telephone conversation with the newly-elected Prime Minister of Mauritius, Hon. Navinchandra Ramgoolam. I congratulated him on his election and for the faith the people of his country have shown in him and his party.

"We affirmed the strong and cordial diplomatic ties between our two countries and peoples and committed ourselves to deepening the relations," he said.

Additionally, Ruto noted that Ramgloolam confirmed his support for Raila Odinga's candidature as the African Union Commission Chairperson. 

"Prime Minister Ramgloolam confirmed his support for Kenya's candidate to the African Union Commission Chairperson, Hon. Raila Odinga, for which I expressed much appreciation," he added.

The opposition coalition in Mauritius, led by Ramgoolam, won the recent parliamentary elections held on November 10, 2024, by a landslide, securing all 60 contested seats. 

This victory marks Ramgoolam's return as prime minister for the third time, following a significant defeat for the ruling coalition led by Pravind Jugnauth, which failed to win any seats. 

He previously held the position from 1995 to 2000 and again from 2005 to 2014. 

Ramgoolam leads the Labour Party and is the son of Mauritius' first Prime Minister, Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. His

His Alliance for Change garnered approximately 62.6% of the vote, signaling a major shift in the country's political landscape.
