President William Ruto has expressed his condolences on the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

In a statement on Monday, December 30, Ruto remembered Carter for his contributions to global peace, human rights, and environmental protection.

"President Jimmy Carter was an extraordinary leader whose dedication to public service was epic. He was a powerful champion for global peace and human rights. We are indebted to his pioneering voice on the actions for a healthy planet that has protected our nature and slowed climate change. 

"Our thoughts and prayers are with President Carter’s family and the people of the United States of America. Rest in Peace," he said.

Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at his home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 100, according to Carter Centre.

He was the longest-lived president in U.S. history and had been in hospice care since February 2023.

Carter who was born on October 1, 1924, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and served in the Navy until 1953. 

He entered politics in the 1960s, serving in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967 and as Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. 

In 1976, he was elected as the 39th President of the United States, serving from 1977 to 1981.

After leaving office, Carter dedicated himself to humanitarian efforts, founding the Carter Center in 1982 to promote human rights and alleviate human suffering.

Carter is survived by his four children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, died in November 2023.
