The County Government of Kirinyaga has unveiled a state-of-the-art Geographic Information System (GIS) lab aimed at improving service delivery within the Department of Lands.

Governor Anne Waiguru said the lab would enhance efficiency, transparency, and customer service while curbing fraud and land grabbing.

“This will help streamline operations and improve service delivery in our lands department,” she said.

Located at the County Headquarters in Kutus, the GIS lab has been established in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to modernize land governance and promote sustainable development.

County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands, Samuel Kanjobe, emphasized that the system will strengthen land management, improve planning, and enhance decision-making on land-related matters.

Kanjobe added that the GIS system would help eliminate cases of double allocation and ownership disputes while improving accuracy in revenue collection.

“The lab is fully equipped with modern hardware, including computers, workstations, and a high-tech plotter, as well as the necessary software for digitization.

"We are now moving to data collection across 135 market and trading centers to create a comprehensive land database, including ownership details, sizes, and land use," he said.

Once completed, customers will be able to access certain land services remotely through digital platforms.

GIS technology integrates hardware, software, and data to store, manage, analyze, and model geospatial information. It plays a crucial role in urban planning, disaster management, environmental conservation, and commercial activities.

The establishment of the GIS lab aligns with the County Government Act of 2012, which mandates counties to develop GIS-based database systems and spatial plans to enhance service delivery and land management.
