  • With the extension, Joho is now guaranteed of facing stiff competition from other ODM heavyweights

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has suffered a setback after ODM on Thursday announced that it has extended the presidential candidate application period by one month.

By Thursday 25, February 2021, reports indicate that only Governor Joho had applied for the position, meaning he would have been handed a direct ticket, had the extension not been announced.

With the extension, Joho is now guaranteed of facing stiff competition from other ODM heavyweights with reports indicating that Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya is among those expected to submit their applications.

Although former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is yet to address whether he’ll vie in 2022 or not, many believe that he’ll be in the race on an ODM ticket; further complicating Governor Joho’s chances.

While announcing the extension on Thursday, ODM elections chairperson Catherine Mumma noted that those interested in flying the party’s flag in the 2022 presidential election have until March 31, 2021, to submit their applications.

“Further to the notice of the National Elections Board of 21st January 2021 calling for the submission of applications by individuals interested in consideration as the ODM party presidential candidate for the 2022 general elections, this is to extend the deadline for the submission of applications from 26th February 2021 to 31st March 2021,” she said.
