A police officer was on Monday, February 10 evening shot dead and his gun stolen in an ambush by suspected bandits along the Maralal-Baragoi road in Samburu County.

The officer who has been identified as Constable Humphrey Oroba was among a group of police officers who were transporting eight remandees from Maralal GK Prisons to Baragoi for a court session.

Upon reaching the Charda area along the Maralal-Baragoi, the officers came under attack and Oroba was shot dead on the spot.

Other officers were forced to seek refuge in a nearby bush as they waited for security reinforcements.

Officers who responded to the scene found Oroba’s body on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds while his AK-47 rifle, loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, was missing.

The eight remandees who escaped during the incident were facing charges of defilement, firearm possession, murder, and robbery with violence.

Two other officers who were reported missing during the incident were found alive and with their firearms and ammunition intact.

Preliminary reports indicate that the attackers knew the movements of the team before staging the attack.
