Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has gazetted the scrapping of the Ksh300 ID application fee.

The CS officially implemented the changes through a special Gazette Notice issued on Wednesday, March 19.

This followed an order that was issued by President William Ruto in Nairobi last week. As was directed by the President, the government will be issuing IDs to first-time applicants for free.

On the other hand, while speaking Shabab, Nakuru County, Murkomen announced the further scrapping of fees that were charged for verification of documents during ID and passport applications.

According to the CS, some Kenyans used to be asked to pay Ksh500 for the verification exercise.

"Even those who are looking for passports, I have announced here that the verifications of documents during passport application will also be free.

"Verification will be the work on the part of the government. That is our responsibility and Kenyans should not be forced to pay anything," he added.

On the other hand, he affirmed that the government would continue with the policy on the removal of extra vetting.

He asserted that the extra vetting was discriminatory and had prevented many Kenyans from accessing government services.
