“The Government of the Republic of Kenya expresses deep concern for its citizens and citizens of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Kingdom of Thailand."

The State Department for Diaspora Affairs has issued a safety advisory to Kenyans living in Myanmar and the Kingdom of Thailand following a powerful earthquake that struck the two countries.

In a statement on Monday, March 31, PS Roseline Njogu said the government is concerned about Kenyans who are in the two countries.

“The Government of the Republic of Kenya expresses deep concern for its citizens and citizens of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Kingdom of Thailand following the recent powerful earthquake that struck the two countries. We stand in solidarity with all those affected by this disaster,” PS Njogu stated.

The Diaspora Affairs PS urged Kenyans in Myanmar and Thailand to keep track of local news and official alerts for real-time information on aftershocks and emergency measures.

PS Njogu also advised Kenyan citizens in the two nations to avoid unnecessary travel to heavily impacted areas.

“Ensure Personal Safety; If in a damaged or unstable building, move to a safe, open area if possible; Be vigilant about falling debris, landslides, or damaged infrastructure,” Njogu stated.

She also called on Kenyans in the two countries to register with the Kenyan Embassy in Bangkok or the nearest East African Community diplomatic mission.

“If not already registered, provide your contact details to the Kenya Embassy in Bangkok, Kingdom of Thailand, or the nearest East African Community diplomatic mission for assistance and updates. Contact: Hotline: +66990745752 Email: [email protected],” the Diaspora Affairs PS said.

Further, PS Njogu called on Kenyans in Thailand and Myanmar to strictly to evacuation orders, shelter advisories, and safety guidelines issued by local disaster management agencies and to reach out to other Kenyans to ensure their well-being.

“We continue to closely monitor the situation, and urge all citizens to please remain safe and maintain communication with the authorities,” Njogu added.

On March 28, an earthquake with a 7.7-magnitude struck Myanmar and extended into Thailand.

The powerful earthquake resulted in the death of over 1600 people, with 3,408 others reported missing.
