Yatta Member of Parliament, Basil Ngui, now says former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i joined the opposition camp following calls from Kenyans.
Speaking during an interview on Wednesday, April 29, Ngui noted that Matiang’i’s performance during the last administration made the young people want him to join the opposition coalition that is seeking to oust President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.
“The call for Matiang'i to join the opposition was not coming from just the team, but came from Kenyans, more so the young people. Remember, he fixed the education system when he was the CS for education, and for the first time in history, exam rigging was mitigated, and credibility was upheld in the education system.
“During his time, we never saw TSC recruitment letters being issued or distributed in public rallies, which we witnessed the other day. These are the issues that made the young people want someone who can make a change,” said the Yatta MP.
Ngui also said that the politicians in the opposition camp have different score cards and can restore Kenya’s lost glory.

“The opposition team is a clear indication that a rebirth of the country is up and coming. If you look at that team, they have different scorecards,” Ngui added.
Matiang’i was welcomed to the opposition team on Tuesday during a meeting held in Karen, Nairobi.
The team includes former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Mukhisa Kituyi.
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, and former PS Torome Saitoti are also part of the team.
Matiang’i, who returned to the country on April 17, has been fronted by the Jubilee Party to vie for presidency in the 2027 general election.
