Kenya Power has warned Kenyans following the emergence of fake land lease agreements.

In a statement dated Tuesday, May 13, the utility firm noted that the lease agreements being shared online did not emanate from it.

Kenya Power stated that fraudsters may be behind the recent post, consequently, warning land owners to exercise caution.

According to the fake document that was being shared online, Kenya Power was seeking to enter agreement with landowners over the installation of power lines.

Fraudsters often use fake documents such as lease agreements to swindle landowners.

To verify authentic information from the utility firm, including job postings, one can always visit the verified social media pages and the website - www.kplc.co.ke.

Kenyans can also verify whether someone claiming to be working for Kenya Power is a genuine employee by using the Kenya Power App or using a USSD code *977#.

Steps to follow

  • Open the MyPower App
  • Tap on the 'Jua for Sure' option
  • Select 'Staff' or 'Contractor'
  • For staff: Enter their staff ID and national ID number
  • For contractors: Enter their ID number

"Always compare the photo on the ID with the person at your door! If the App indicates that the person is not a legitimate Kenya Power employee, report immediately to our fraud hotline: 0718999000," Kenya Power noted in its advisory.
