Salasya was on Friday arrested along the Isiolo-Nanyuki road and detained at Central Police Station in Nairobi.

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has been released on bail after spending the weekend in police custody. 

Salasya, who was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday, May 19, to face hate speech charges, was granted cash bail of Ksh200,000. 

"Hon. Peter Salasya has been granted bail by the Milimani Law Courts in the amount of Ksh200,000 in cash, pending further legal proceedings," a member of Salasya’s team confirmed the development.

Salasya was arrested on Friday, May 16, along the Isiolo-Nanyuki road and detained at Central Police Station in Nairobi.

"I have been arrested on my way from Isiolo-Nanyuki road. I was attacked by unknown individuals claiming to be DCI officers.

"These people, heavily armed and moving with force, ambushed my convoy, disarmed my security team, confiscating their firearms, and pursued my vehicle," he stated.

A member of Salasya's team further claimed that the MP's vehicle was shot at, and the MP was taken by force.

"Multiple unidentified vehicles intercepted and opened fire on our convoy. The tires of the car carrying Salasya were shot, and the vehicle was immobilized. His bodyguards have been disarmed, and Hon. Salasya has been taken by force.

"This is a serious threat to his life, and immediate intervention is needed. We urgently appeal for help from," the statement read.

Addressing the press, Salasya's lawyer, Ian Mutiso, said the people who arrested the legislator were covered and heavily armed.

"He is facing a charge of false publication and matters of hate speech," Mutiso told the journalists.
