Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga is set to be deported from Tanzania following his detention at the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.

Also set to be deported from Tanzania are Activists Hussein Khalid and Hanifa Adan.

The trio had travelled to Tanzania on Monday, May 19, to attend the court proceedings of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

In a statement, Khalid noted that they had been handed over to Kenya Airways with instructions that they be deported to Kenya on the next flight.

"Finally, we have our passports back. Up to this point, no reasons have been given for the denial of entry," read the statement in part.

"We’ve been handed over to Kenya Airways officials for immediate deportation."

The two are set to board their flight at 2:50 pm and arrive in Nairobi at around 4 pm.

The deportation of the three Kenyans comes a day after Martha Karua and two other lawyers were denied entry to Tanzania.

Karua and the other leaders were also set to attend Lissu's court proceedings.

Tanzania is yet to issue a statement to explain why the leaders have been denied entry. However, Kenya had called on Tanzanian authorities to release the former CJ.

"We strongly urge the authorities in Tanzania to release the former Chief Justice of Kenya and his delegation consistent with the norms of the East African Community,” Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei stated.
