Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has pushed for tough penalties for Kenyans who stage their abductions, following the recent incident involving Juja MP George Koimburi.
Speaking during a stakeholders meeting on Friday, May 30, the CS expressed that the MP was likely to face light charges following allegations that he staged his abduction.
Therefore, Murkomen recommended that a new law be put in place to ensure that there are tough penalties that discourage such incidents.
"We've been going through the law to find out what charges this MP will face. You will realise that most offences committed may be lighter.
"We need a more serious law that will provide serious punishment for people who are faking kidnappings," he stated.

The CS asserted that such actions should not go unpunished, as they watered down real cases where there are enforced disappearances.
"The act of self-abduction creates despondency among the population, and it makes cheaper and lighter the serious subject of abductions," the CS remarked.
"Tomorrow, someone will stage the abduction or killing of somebody. There could be a staged abduction that could terribly go wrong."
On the other hand, he noted that there was a trend where some Kenyans were staging abductions for financial gain from their families and spouses.
Koimburi has been accused by the police of staging his abduction.
According to a report by the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, the MP spent a night at a hotel on Sunday and was taken to the coffee plantation on Monday morning.
"One suspect, Karanja Gatana, has been arrested. Gatana admitted to dropping the MP at a hotel where he had refreshments and spent the night with the two abductors on 25 May 2025, following the alleged abduction," read the statement in part.
"He added that, on 26 May 2025, while using Kiratu's vehicle, he picked up the MP from the hotel and took him to the scene where they claimed he had been dumped. Before the MP exited the vehicle, he helped him tear his clothes to fake evidence of torture by the alleged abductors."
