The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has announced the planned auction of properties belonging to former Migori Governor Okoth Obado.

EACC estimates the total value of the properties to be auctioned at Ksh428 million.

Speaking to the media on Friday, June 13, EACC CEO Abdi Ahmed stated that the properties were surrendered by the former county boss following investigations and court proceedings over a Ksh1.9 billion graft case.

The CEO added that the properties were settled on after talks between the former governor and EACC lawyers.

Ahmed stated that the move would be vital to ensure that other public officers are deterred from misappropriating public funds.

"The reason why we recover assets, other than returning them to the rightful owners, is actually to act as a deterrent to other people so they don't enjoy the proceeds of corruption," he stated.

"The problem we have with politicians is mainly their supporters, not the politicians themselves, because you will find the public wants you to investigate a politician, but it's the same public that defends them."

The properties in Nairobi that will be sold at auction include an unfinished Runda plot valued at Ksh50 million and a Loresho Ridge house valued at Ksh40 million.

The former governor also surrendered a three-bedroom Riara apartment worth Ksh22 million, two Greenspan Estate apartments valued at Ksh18 million, and a Greenspan maisonette valued at Ksh14.5 million.

Other listed properties to be auctioned are located in Kisumu and Migori counties.

Once the properties are sold, the funds will be returned to the government for public use.

The auction has been slated for Monday, June 23.
