Controversial preacher Bishop Gilbert Deya was on Tuesday, June 17 evening, killed in a gruesome road accident at Namba Kapiyo along the Kisumu–Bondo highway.
The tragic accident occurred after Deya’s Toyota Noah vehicle lost control and rammed into a bus belonging to Moi University.
The Toyota Noah was heading towards Bondo while the Moi University bus was on its way to Kisumu.
The driver of the bus, while trying to avoid a head-on collision, swerved the bus, but it ended up rolling off the road.
A Toyota Fortuner belonging to the County Government of Siaya, which was trailing the bus, was also hit during the incident.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Boss Peter Maina confirmed the accident, noting that Bishop Deya was driving the Toyota Noah when the accident happened.
“We have since learned that the driver of the Toyota Noah who died was Pastor Gilbert Deya. This was confirmed by his wife, who was also in the vehicle alongside a female passenger,” Maina said.
He also noted that 15 Moi University students sustained serious injuries during the accident and were taken to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for treatment.
Thirteen other students escaped the accident with minor injuries and were taken to the Kombewa Sub-County Hospital in Seme.
Meanwhile, the body of Bishop Deya was taken to the Kombewa Sub-County Hospital morgue.
Bishop Deya came to the limelight in the early 2000s through the controversial ‘miracle babies’ saga.
The preacher claimed that he could help infertile women conceive through prayer and divine intervention.
This led to authorities in both the United Kingdom and Kenya to launch investigations against the preacher after he was linked to a child trafficking syndicate.
Bishop Deya was extradited to Kenya in August 2017 however, his legal proceedings were further delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The preacher was acquitted of the child trafficking charges in May 2023 after the court ruled that the prosecution had failed to establish a credible case.
