PLP leader Martha Karua has revealed that the opposition will establish a parallel electoral commission to monitor the 2027 elections.

People's Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has revealed that the opposition will establish a parallel electoral commission to monitor and safeguard the 2027 elections.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, July 24, Karua said the opposition will not allow the next election to be compromised.

"I want to restate very firmly that in this election, we will be vigilant. And even we, as the United Opposition, will have our own commission; the People’s IEBC that is to observe, give direction, and guide us.

"I ask the citizens to be alert. We have had too many flawed elections; but in this election, even if Ruto is both the IEBC chairman and a candidate, this election will not be stolen,” she declared.

Additionally, Karua called on citizens across the country to mobilize and protect the sanctity of the ballot, and allow those duly elected to serve.

"Kenyans too will be vigilant. I want to ask everyone, wherever you are, let’s be ready, let’s ensure we all vote from every corner of Kenya and stay alert. Let those who are elected by the people be accepted, and let them lead," she added.

This comes barely a week after Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo called on the commission to take a hard stance against politicians who publicly suggest they intend to rig or steal elections.

Speaking on Sunday, July 20, Ngogoyo argued that such statements should not be taken lightly, as they signal an intention to incite unrest and compromise the integrity of Kenya’s electoral process.

"The IEBC has been formed; it has a chairperson and commissioners whom we trust to carry out the task of overseeing the election. But we are asking that if you hear someone, especially a Member of Parliament, saying they will steal votes, or saying they will rig the election, that person clearly has the intention of disrupting peace.

"We are calling on the IEBC, any individuals who want to disrupt peace, including Members of Parliament or agents of the presidency, should not be allowed to participate in an election where they themselves have confessed they will engage in vote stealing," he said.
