Moses Kuria has criticized UDA MPs pushing for Kiambu County to be declared as a standalone region, separate from Mt Kenya.

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has criticized Members of Parliament from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party who are pushing for Kiambu County to be declared a separate region from Mt Kenya.

In a statement on Thursday, August 28, Kuria said Kiambu County will remain an integral part of the Mt Kenya region.

Kuria likened the new push to isolate Kiambu from Mt Kenya to the infamous Kiambu Mafia during Jomo Kenyatta’s era, warning that such efforts are bound to fail.

“Let me state categorically that Kiambu will always be part of Mt Kenya. And not an isolated Mt Kenya but one that will be a proud part and parcel of our wonderful nation, Kenya,” said Kuria.

The former CS went on to say that the Mt Kenya voters would rally behind one political basket in the 2027 General Election.

Kuria emphasized that the Mt Kenya region would not place conditions such as demanding the presidency, deputy presidency, or Prime Cabinet Secretary position in the 2027 elections.

“And for avoidance of doubt, that Mt Kenya will pit all their 6 million votes in one basket in 2027.

“They will do so unconditionally without demanding to be given the Presidency, the running mate, or the Prime Cabinet Secretary,” Kuria added.

On Wednesday, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah backed a proposal seeking autonomy for Kiambu from the larger Mt Kenya region.

Speaking during a meeting at State House in Nairobi, Ichung’wah argued that Kiambu has long been placed under Mt Kenya for political and cultural convenience, despite having a distinct identity of its own.

“We have been referred to as the people of Mt Kenya, but the only mountains the people of Kiambu see are Ngong Hills and Kilimambogo. They have said they are a region by themselves; Kiambu is a region on its own,” said Ichungwah.

On August 6, UDA MPs from Kiambu County, in a press conference, claimed that the high number of voters in the county makes them eligible to be recognized as a standalone region.

“We have about 1.5 million votes, equal to the votes of the other four counties combined. We don’t want the President to be saying he has been to Kiambu when he visits Mt Kenya.

“Kiambu, we are a stand-alone region, we want our own development, plans, our ministers, PSs, and our own money,” Gatundu North MP Njoroge Karuria said.
