Kituyi has an extensive background in politics, diplomacy, and economics. He previously served as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary-General between 2013 and 2021.

Before joining UNCTAD, Kituyi served as a member of parliament for Kimilili from 1992 to 2007 and as Kenya’s Minister of Trade and Industry from 2002 to 2007.

During the period, Kituyi chaired the Council of Ministers of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the African Trade Ministers' Council.

The former MP also served as chairman of the Council of Ministers of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States, and was lead negotiator for Eastern and Southern African ministers during the European Union-ACP Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations.

Kituyi was also a member of a team of experts advising the presidents of the nations of the East African Community on how to establish more effective regional economic links from 2008 to 2012.

Ahead of the 2022 general elections, Kituyi had announced his presidential ambitions; however, he withdrew his candidacy to support ODM leader Raila Odinga.
