Several people were injured on Thursday, October 2 evening after roofs in part of the Kibuye Market in Kisumu County collapsed.

The Kibuye market’s roof caved in at around 6 pm following a heavy downpour in the area.

The heavy rainfall began in the evening hours and intensified through the night, leading to the incident.

The incident left traders inside the market nursing injuries and counting losses of unknown value.

According to witnesses, they heard a loud crash as the market’s roof caved inside. The traders screamed and ran for their safety.

Following the incident, response teams were deployed to the scene and rushed the injured to the nearby Lumumba Hospital for treatment.

Photos of the incident seen by Nairobileo.co.ke showed the traders stranded at the market. Others could be seen trying to remove their goods from the collapsed roof.

The ultra-modern market was officially opened to traders in 2022 after being constructed at a cost of Ksh315 million.

The market is regarded as one of the largest open-air markets in East Africa, where people buy and sell everything from fresh produce and spices to clothing and crafts.

The incident comes just months after a fire razed Marikiti Market in Kisii County. The blaze, which broke out around 2 a.m. on June 29, spread rapidly through the market, reducing stalls and shops to ashes.

Traders who rushed to the Marikiti market attempted to extinguish the fire, but their efforts were futile.

Photos and videos of the aftermath showed the market completely gutted, with corrugated iron sheets and charred debris scattered across the ground.

Preliminary reports indicated that no fire engine was dispatched by the Kisii County Government to contain the blaze.
