Government's Head of Creative Economy and Special Projects, Dennis Itumbi, has sparked a debate online after claiming two newly elected MCAs in Nyamira County were broad-based candidates.

In a statement on Tuesday, December 2, Itumbi alleged that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) party is in the broad-based government.

Itumbi went on to say the opposition had no idea how by-elections in Nyamira County were planned.

“The two newly elected MCAs in Nyamira were, in fact, Broad-Based candidates. UPA is fully aligned with the Broad-Based setup, and Governor Amos Nyaribo, as Party Leader, praised them for delivering a Broad-Based triumph.

“The United in Confusion opposition had no idea how well the game was planned. Once again, Congratulations, broad-based for winning in Nyamira,” said Itumbi.

Itumbi’s statement came after the two newly elected MCAs, Jeremiah Ongaro of Ekerenyo ward and Chris Osiemo of Nyamaiya ward, met with Governor Amos Nyaribo, Governor Simba Arati, Silvanus Osoro and Japhet Nyakundi.

In the recent by-elections in Nyamaiya, Osiemo garnered 4,790 votes, followed by Thomas Nyandieka of UDA, who got 1,357.

In Ekerenyo ward, UPA’s Ongaro garnered 3,507 votes, followed by UDA’s Francis Ndubi Amenya with 2,292 votes.

Itumbi’s remarks sparked a discussion online with netizens questioning how the two UPA candidates were in broad-based, yet UDA fielded candidates in Nyamira during the November 27 by-elections.

A section of netizens argued that the meeting was a plan to save Governor Nyaribo, who is facing an impeachment motion in the Senate.
