Justice Koome is set make history as first female Chief Justice in Kenya. Speaking after her nomination, she assured Kenyans that they have nothing to worry about.

Chief Justice nominee Lady Justice Martha Koome has thanked Kenyans for praying for and supporting her in her quest to be Kenya’s next top judge.

Speaking after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) recommended her for appointment as Chief Justice, Justice Koome noted that under her leadership, the Judiciary will be in safe hands.

She assured Kenyans that they have nothing to worry about.

“You are in safe hands and I thank God you prayed for me,” she said.

Lady Justice Martha Koome emerged victorious edging senior judges and advocates that include; Justice William Ouko, Justice Nduma Nderi, Senior Counsels Fred Ngatia, and Philip Murgor among others.

During her interview, Justice Koome noted that some of her key priorities will be clearing of backlog, increasing manpower, and working with other stakeholders to improve budgetary allocations to the Judiciary.

“Human capital is at 56 percent and we have a deficit of 44 percent. We also have budgetary constraints as Judiciary received 0.86 percent of the national budget,” she is quoted as saying.

Justice Koome will also be expected to intervene in the appointment of 40 judges that has since stalled after the executive failed to approve the judges nominated by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for different positions.

Other key issues that await her include, handling corruption within the Judiciary, improving ICT and digitization, easing access to justice, and providing leadership among others.

Following her nomination, the focus now shifts to the position of Supreme Court Judge. JSC on Tuesday announced that interviews for the post will commence on May 3, 2021.
