3 Suspects Arrested Over Murder of Ex-Councillor Nathan Wasama

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested three suspects in connection with the fatal shooting of former councillor Nathan Wasama. 

In a statement on Wednesday, August 12, DCI said Wasama was shot dead on the night of August 8, 2026, at his shop in Tuikut Trading Centre, Cheptais, Bungoma County. 

According to DCI, four men arrived at the trading centre on two motorcycles before one of the pillion passengers alighted and walked into Wasama's shop and shot him dead before fleeing the scene. 

“Wasama was shot dead on the night of August 8, 2026, at his shop in Tuikut Trading Centre, Sasur Location, Cheptais Sub-County, after four men arrived at the trading centre on two motorcycles.

“Preliminary investigations established that one of the pillion passengers alighted, walked into Wasama’s shop and shot him before fleeing with his accomplices,” DCI said. 

During the incident, a woman was also shot and injured and is currently admitted at a local hospital in stable condition.

The DCI detectives followed credible leads and first arrested Oscar Koech Sakong, one of the suspects linked to the murder.

On Tuesday, August 11, detectives raided a residence in Marigo Village, Cheptais Location, and arrested two additional suspects, Wycliffe Chesubei Ngeiwa, alias Chota, and Geoffrey Makwere Masai.

“The operation also yielded a haul of items including a military-style smoke jacket, a stun grenade, three axes, a crowbar, three folding pangas, two pangas, two knives, five arrows, three motorcycles, two mobile phones and an iPod,” DCI stated. 

The two suspects are in custody as detectives process them for arraignment and seek custodial orders to facilitate further investigations.

Meanwhile, the DCI is pursuing additional suspects and is following leads to establish the motive, identify all those involved and piece together the events surrounding the fatal shooting of the former councillor.

This comes days after Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa expressed sorrow over Wasama's death, describing the incident as tragic.

"It is with profound sadness that I learned of the tragic death of former Councillor Nathan Wasama, who was reportedly shot at his home in Tuikut, Cheptais, and later succumbed to his injuries," he wrote.

Barasa condemned the killing, saying no one should lose their life in such circumstances and insisting that those responsible must be identified and brought to justice through the legal process.

"I unequivocally condemn this senseless act of violence. No one should lose their life under such tragic circumstances, and those responsible must be identified and held accountable through the due process of the law," he added.
