Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has given an update on the ongoing expansion of the 233-kilometre Rironi–Mau Summit highway.
In a statement on Thursday, August 20, PS Omollo said the construction of the road is advancing smoothly from both ends.

According to PS Omollo, the Rironi-Mau Summit road project is targeted for completion by June 2027.
“Supervised by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and targeted for completion by June 2027, the project is being delivered through a dual-front approach, with construction advancing simultaneously from both ends,” he said.

The Interior PS noted that the Rironi–Naivasha section will become a four-lane dual carriageway, while the Naivasha–Nakuru section will be a six-lane highway.

An elevated bypass will be constructed through Nakuru City to ease urban congestion.
PS Omollo mentioned that from Nakuru to Mau Summit, the road will also be expanded to four lanes.
He further highlighted that the road project is expected to reduce travel and transit times along the corridor.

“This transformation means safer travel, shorter transit times and stronger trade along a corridor that carries more than 30% of cargo destined for the larger Western Kenya Region, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and the DRC,” PS Omollo added.
The construction of the Rironi-Mau Summit road project was launched by President William Ruto in November, 2025.
The project, which is being implemented through a Public-Private Partnership between CRBC and NSSF, will be constructed over two years at a cost of USD 863 million (Ksh170 billion), followed by a 30-year operation period.

Motorists who will use the section between Rironi-Naivasha-Gilgil Road and the Rironi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha Road will pay a toll of Ksh8 per kilometre.
On the other hand, motorists will pay a toll fee of Ksh8.50 per kilometer to use the Gilgil-Mau Summit section once it is completed.
