President William Ruto has made new appointments to the Advisory Committee on Military Veterans and the National Board for Social Protection.
In a gazette notice dated Friday, August 28, President Ruto appointed retired Major General William Karisa Shume as a Non-Executive Chairperson of the Advisory Committee on Military Veterans.
According to the gazette notice, Shume will serve in the role for a period of four years, effective August 28, 2026.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 10 (2) (a) of the Military Veterans Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Maj. Gen. (Rtd) William Karisa Shume to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Advisory Committee on Military Veterans, for a period of four (4) years, with effect from 28th August, 2026,” read the notice.
The Head of State also appointed Cecilia Mbaka to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the National Board for Social Protection.

Mbaka will serve on the board for three years, effective August 28, 2026.
In other state appointments, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi appointed Thomas Kiprono Serem to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the National Research Fund, for a term of three years.
Mudavadi also appointed Davidson Mwaisaka, Michael Walekhwa and Joel Onditi to be members of the Board of the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation.
The three new members will serve on the board for a period of three years.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba appointed Abdi Mouild Abdi to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Council of the Kenya Institute of Special Education. Abdi will serve on the council for three years.
Similarly, CS Ogamba appointed Daniel Njiru Mugendi and Fred Simiyu Barasa as members of the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service Placement Board for three years.
This comes weeks after President Ruto appointed Benson Gichuhi Njoroge as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO).
Njoroge replaced businessman Dr Thuo Mathenge, whose appointment was revoked in July.
He also announced the re-appointment of Lucy Waruingi as the Chairperson of the Governing Board of the Wildlife Conservation Trust Fund, for a period of three years.
Meanwhile, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir appointed Mohamed Rahid Abdille as a member of the Kenya Rural Roads Authority Board of Directors for a period of three years.
