KeNHA Announces Partial Closure of a Section of Mombasa Road

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the partial closure of a section of Mombasa Road (A8) at Cabanas to facilitate construction works.

In a statement on Thursday, September 10, the agency said the closure will affect the Eastern Bypass off-ramp on the JKIA-bound section of Mombasa Road and will remain in place for more than a month.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) notifies the public that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) at the Cabanas on the Eastern Bypass Off-Ramp on JKIA bound, will be temporarily closed partially from Thursday, September 17, 2026, to Thursday, October 22, 2026," the statement read.

KeNHA said the temporary traffic restriction was necessary to create room for drainage infrastructure works along the affected section of the highway.

"This closure is to allow for construction of a box drain on this road section," the statement added.

KeNHA said motorists travelling towards JKIA from the Eastern Bypass would be required to use a designated diversion lane during the construction period.

"All Motorists intending to use Mombasa Road (JKIA bound) from Eastern Bypass will use provided diversion lane and follow the proposed directions by traffic marshals to ensure minimal traffic disruption in compliance with road safety measures," the statement further read.

KeNHA further urged motorists to adhere to the traffic management arrangements put in place and cooperate with officers and traffic marshals managing traffic at the site.

The authority said normal traffic flow would resume once the construction works were completed.

"Motorists are further advised to follow the proposed traffic management plan as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site. Normal traffic operations on the road will be restored upon completion of the works," the statement concluded.

This comes a week after KeNHA issued a 30-day eviction notice to traders and other occupants encroaching on the designated road reserve along the Nanyuki–Naibor Turnoff–Doldol (B101) Road.

In a statement on Thursday, September 3, the agency said the enforcement exercise is part of preparations for the planned improvement of the busy road.

"Clearing the way for the planned improvement of the Nanyuki - Naibor Turnoff - Doldol (B101) Road, KeNHA undertook an enforcement exercise along the designated road reserve to identify and address encroachments," the statement read.

During the exercise, KeNHA identified structures that had been put up within the road reserve and took steps to notify those affected.

"The exercise involved marking unauthorised structures and issuing formal notices to affected occupants as part of efforts to reclaim the road reserve and safeguard public safety ahead of the planned works," the statement added.

According to KeNHA, traders and other individuals affected by the enforcement exercise have been given 30 days to remove their structures and vacate the road reserve.

"Affected traders and other encroachers were directed to clear their structures and vacate the road reserve within thirty days.

"The exercise underscores KeNHA’s commitment to protecting road reserves, facilitating smooth project implementation, and ensuring safe passage for all road users," the statement concluded.
