Wandayi denied any involvement in the AI-generated campaign. 

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has responded to a report that an unknown user used the Claude AI platform to run an AI-generated campaign to praise his performance.

In a statement issued on Friday, September 9, CS Wandayi stated that the reports are unverified and denied any involvement in the campaign.

He added that the Ministry was committed to using the right communication channels to highlight the goals it had achieved.

"The report itself does not establish that either the Cabinet Secretary or the Ministry authorised, directed, or otherwise participated in the alleged activity.

"We remain focused on communicating the Ministry’s work through credible channels and will not be distracted by speculation around anonymous online activities," the CS stated.

Wandayi added that despite the report of an artificial campaign to push the narrative, his delivery in the Ministry of Energy spoke for itself.

He claimed that while there are probably millions of anonymous and coordinated accounts on social media pushing different narratives every day, what matters is evidence.

His statement came after Anthropic, the firm that runs Claude AI, confirmed that it had identified and removed an account operated by a single actor who used the platform to produce political content.

The firm explained that the content was curated to seem like an honest and organic perception of members of the public.

Anthropic said the operation concentrated on prominent political issues and figures in Kenya, including the debate surrounding electricity tariffs and Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.

" A large portion of the Al-generated tweets praised Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi for stopping a scheduled Kenya Power electricity tariff hike, using the hashtags #PowerReliefE and #PoweringTheNewKenya to boost visibility," the report read.

The firm said that the operation sought to promote narratives about divisions within the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election, with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former President Uhuru Kenyatta among those targeted.

Anthropic said it had not established the identities of the individuals behind the operation but assessed that it was a locally run Kenyan political campaign.
