  • Ministry of Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has announced the formation of a special police squad to tackle the increased cases of kidnappings and persons going missing across the country.

Ministry of Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has taken action over increased cases of kidnappings and persons going missing across the country, noting that a special team has been formed to deal with the issue.

Speaking on Monday during the 2021 Inspector General’s conference in Nairobi, Matiang’i noted that the special squad has been given the necessary resources to undertake the assignment.

He expressed optimism that current undertakings by the DCI, coupled with activities of the new squad will sort out the issue.

“We have agreed that we will deploy special and aggressive resources to deal with this issue. It is a very small matter, as already the DCI has made great strides in tracking the gangs behind this,” Matiang'i said.

According to the CS, most of the cases are as a result of illegal business deals going wrong, with aggrieved parties resorting to abductions and is some cases murder.

“Some of these incidents involve criminal business attitudes, some of our people have predatory attitude. People get into informal but criminal business arrangements but when they go south, they now resort to murdering each other. We are however sorting it,” Matiang’i opined.

His statement comes at a time when cases of people going missing only for the bodies to be found dumped in rivers and other deserted areas have been on the rise in the country.

In April, four friends were kidnapped in Kitengela area only for some of the bodies to be found dumped in Murang’a and Kiambu counties.

A few weeks later, Somali-American businessman Bashir Mohammed was reported missing only for his body to be found in Kerugoya a few days later.

Last week, a Nyeri businessman was abducted by unknown persons, and to date, his whereabouts are yet to be established.

These are just a few of the many cases of person mysteriously going missing across the country over the past few months. Many are hoping that the new squad will sort out the issue and do away with the gangs behind the abductions and murder in some cases.
