The Inspector-General of Police (IG) Hillary Mutyambai has issued a new directive urging Kenyans not to give police money for fuel while they are responding to emergencies.

Speaking during the Engage IG series on Twitter, Mutyambai noted that it is illegal for police officers to demand fuel money before responding to emergencies.

According to the IG, police officers have been equipped with relevant resources to respond to emergencies, therefore, they should not request for any facilitation fee.

“You should not give money for fuel at any police station. All you need to do is report an incident and police will take action any demand for cash is illegal,” Mutyambai said.

The IG issued the remark in response to a netizen who noted that the issue of police demanding facilitation before responding to emergencies is on the rise.

“Sir please do something about the police corruption on the road and the issue of kulipia mafuta whenever the police are called,” the netizen identified as Ken Proud Citizen posted on Twitter.

The IG also used the forum to address queries about increased cases of cybercrime, where he noted that a special unit has been put in place to handle such, therefore any victim of cybercrime should report the same to the nearest police station.

“We have a specialized cybercrime unit working round the clock tackling such issues. Kindly report to the nearest police station for action,” he said in response to another netizen.

Every Monday, the IG uses #EngageTheIG on Twitter to address security issues facing Kenyans.
