A police constable attached to the presidential escort unit was arrested in Kirinyaga County for allegedly abducting 36-year-old Mercy Wahu Njogu. 

A police constable attached to the presidential escort unit was arrested in Kirinyaga County for allegedly abducting 36-year-old Mercy Wahu Njogu. 

The officer was nabbed alongside two other individuals when Mercy shouted for help as they tried to force her to go and withdraw money from the bank which attracted the attention of Kutus residents.  

According to Gichugu Sub-county Police Commander Anthony Mbogo, the officer is based at the Ruiru General Service Unit (GSU) camp. 

The three suspects arrested are GSU officer Col. Samuel Mwangi Nyaga, 38, Mathew Karanja, 35, and Wilfred Ngari, 38. 

Mr. Mbogo said that the presidential escort aide was being sought for deserting his duty since March this year.

"The officer was declared a deserter in the national police service vide Prescott Nairobi signal," said Mbogo.

The three were presented in court on Tuesday at 4:00 PM and detectives were allowed to detain them for seven days. 

The suspects will be held at Kianyaga police station as they wait to appear in court on November 23, 2021.

Presidential Escort Unit

The presidential escort unit was established to support the following functions of the Kenya Police Service in accordance with Section 24 of the National Police Service Act, 2011.

i. To provide security and protection to His Excellency the President.

ii. To provide security to the First Family.

iii. Provide security to the retired Presidents.

iv. Provide security to His Excellency the Deputy President.

v. Provide security to visiting Heads of State and Governments.

vi. Provide Security to any other V.I.P. as may be directed by the Inspector-General.
