Former Nationa Media Group journalist Gatonye Gathura has been found dead in the Naivasha Sub-County Referral Hospital morgue after going missing for weeks.
The remains of the veteran Health and Science journalist were reportedly discovered in Kihoto Estate in Naivasha, on October 26 and taken to the morgue where it was marked as an "unknown adult".
He was identified after police conducted a run on his fingers.
Gatonye had been missing since October 26.
A source told Nairobi Leo that the body had a rope around his neck; suggesting that he could have been strangled to death.
The family of the deceased reportedly recorded statements on Wednesday, November 24, when the body was finally found.
Naivasha Sub-County Police Commander Samuel Waweru told the press that the case is being treated as murder and they have launched an investigation to unravel the puzzle.
“We are treating his death as murder. We suspect he was killed elsewhere and the body dumped in Naivasha,” he said.
Former colleague Wahome Thuku eulogised Gitonye's praising him for his dedication and commitment while discharging his mandate.
Wahome Thuku who worked with him at NMG said: "the media fraternity in Kenya is getting hit hard. Only veterans feel it. We have lost Gatonye Gathura one of the living legends in Health and Science Journalism. I worked with him for years at the NMG. I have never met another so committed to that field. Go well bro and RIP".
Gatonye also worked at the Standard Media Group. He left the media to set up his Health and Science blog called Rocket Science.
