Kericho County Police boss Silas Gichunge said that the two would be arraigned in court on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.

A bodyguard who was attached to the security detail of Kericho governor Paul Chekwony and a prison warder, who were accused of allegedly beating a relative to death have surrendered to police.

Kericho County Police boss Silas Gichunge said that the two would be arraigned in court on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.

“They surrendered and detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are in the process of grilling them before they are finally arraigned,” Gichunge said.

In the late December incident, the bodyguard and warden are said to have beaten Leonard Kipyegon to death after accusing him of stealing a beehive.

The police boss had revealed that the bodyguard picked up Kiyegon along with his friend Emmanuel Kiprotich and walked them into his compound where the warden was waiting.

Using a hammer, the two descended on the young men mercilessly.

Kipyegon's uncle, John Yego told the media on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, that he watched his nephew die in the hands of the warden and the bodyguard.

"As I walked into the compound, I heard wailing. I decided to look into the matter only to find him being beaten. He was finished," Yegon narrated.

The two assailants fled the crime scene and were being trailed by law enforcement before they opted to surrender.

Gichunge had called upon area residents to assist the police with investigations and report any sighting of the two fugitives.

The deceased's friend, Kiprotich survived the beating and was rushed to the Kericho County Referral hospital with broken limbs and is still admitted, undergoing treatment.

Kipyegon's family demanded that justice be accorded to them and the two assailants be prosecuted.

"I call upon the government to take action on the people who killed my grandson," the deceased's grandmother pleaded.

The family further castigated the two assailants for taking matters into their own hands instead of reporting the young men to the authorities.

"These were just children. If they committed any offence, arrest them and charge them. Don't kill them," the deceased's aunt stated.
