Twenty people have died after an accident involving a matatu and trailer at Taru and Samburu along the Mombasa Nairobi highway.
Confirming the accident on Friday, July 8, Coast Regional Traffic Boss Peter Maina said that the fifteen died on the spot in the head-on collision accident.
Kinango OCPD Fredrick Ombaka said, "We have counted twenty bodies. More passengers boarded the shuttle at Voi hence the high number of casualties."
In photos seen by Nairobileo.co.ke, the matatu was completely wrecked, with the front side of the trailer heavily damaged.

The accident comes amid a rise in accidents across the country, with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in collaboration with the National Police Service (NPS) launching a crackdown on non-compliant motor vehicles.
In a statement on June 8, police spokesperson Bruno Shioso said that it was regrettable that many road accidents were caused by human-related factors.
“The Inspector-General of Police and the NTSA director-general has directed a joint multi-agency crackdown to weed out all non-compliant motor vehicles and motorists who are violating the Traffic Act and related laws. The directive takes immediate effect,” Shioso stated.
According to Shioso, a total of 1,968 deaths had been recorded as of June 3, 2022, compared with 1,800 in the same period last year.
