24 people have been confirmed dead after a modern coast-bound bus plunged into Nithi river along the Meru - Nairobi highway.
The bus was heading to Mombasa County from Meru County on Sunday, July 24, when the accident happened.
Reports indicate the bus developed a break failure when it hit the guard rails before it plunged into the river, 40 meters below the bridge.
Rescue efforts are ongoing with police saying the injured have been rushed to Chogoria and Chuka hospitals.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 1,912 people lost their lives in road accidents from January to May this year.
NTSA Deputy Director Road Safety Duncan Kibogong said this was an increase of 9 percent of total fatalities on Kenyan roads as compared to a similar period last year when a total of 1754 road users lost their lives.
“Up to 80 percent of the causes of road traffic injuries are because of behavioral aspects, how we behave on the roads," said Kibogong.
