A grisly road accident in Fuludhi Bridge along the Siaya-Rang'ala road has left a police officer burnt to death while two of his colleagues sustained injuries.

The driver of the vehicle they had boarded lost control leading to the accident.

He is said to have rammed into the bridge's guard rails before the vehicle rolled over.

The vehicle belonged to one of the police officers.

The two police officers who survived the accident crawled from the burning vehicle to safety.

The sustained injuries on the leg.

Latest statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority show that road accidents claimed 3,541 since beginning of the year to September 26 compared to 3,286 deaths over similar period in 2021.


The data shows that pedestrians still account for the highest casualties at 1,269 followed by motorcyclists at 941.


Pedestrians represent a 10.9 per cent increase from last year's 1,144 while 3.8 per cent (941) more motorcyclists died over the period under review compared to 912 last year.


The statistics further indicate that passengers recorded the highest jump in fatalities by 20.3 per cent from 527 in 2021 to 634 this year.


However, the number of pillion passengers dropped marginally by -0.61 per cent from 326 in 2021 to 324 over the period under review. 


Similarly, fatalities involving pedal cyclists decreased to 49 from 63 reported last year, representing and -22.2 percent per cent drop.


Meanwhile, the number of drivers who perished in road accidents increased by 3.18 per cent from 314 to 324.  Commander Mwagangi says the vehicle burst into flame before rescue efforts were launched.

The deceased remains were taken to Siaya County Hospital morgue while the survivors are receiving treatment in the same facility.
