2023 was a memorable year, but it also had its low moments. The country was hit by a number of high-profile deaths.

1. George Magoha

The former Education Cabinet Secretary died on 23 January at Nairobi Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 71.
Magoha was laid to rest on 11 February at his home in Umiru, Siaya County after a funeral service attended by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Azimio leader Raila Odinga and other politicians.
Before his death, Magoha had been appointed professor of surgery at Maseno School of Medicine.
2. Mukami Kimathi
The widow of veteran Mau Mau freedom fighter the late Dedan Kimathi, Mukami Kimathi died at her home in Nairobi on 4 May 2023 at the age of 101.
"Mama Mukami Kimathi courageously withstood the brutality of colonial oppression, proudly wore the scars of the battle, and bore the terrible losses of war with admirable fortitude. She was a legendary fighter in her own right and the wife of the legend, Dean Waciuri Kimathi, who was captured, tried, and executed by the colonial state,” President Ruto eulogized the freedom fighter.
Before her death, Mukami had been in and out of Nairobi Hospital, where she had been receiving treatment for most of her life.
Mukami was buried on 13 May in Njabini, Nyandarua County.
3. Duncan Ochonjo
The popular actor who starred in the comedy show Njoro Wa Uba died on 10 May while receiving treatment at a local hospital. Ochonjo's brother Kevin Okoth in an interview disclosed that the actor died after suffering organ failure.
“All his organs were not in good shape, liver, kidney. He had Tuberculosis and you can’t treat TB while these organs are not functioning. There was a clash of medication, so it was hard." Okoth explained.
He also recounted having a bad feeling from the moment he was called to take his ailing brother to hospital.
"It was too late, when we reached the hospital, the doctor called me and told me your brother is in a very bad state,” Okoth added.
4. Sean Cardovillis
Cardovillis was one of the most prominent and insightful sports journalists in Kenya who worked for Capital FM.
He had previously worked at Nation as a radio sports commentator and sports anchor.
Cradovillis was found dead at his home in Westlands, Nairobi on September 9, 2023. His body was discovered by a cleaner who had arrived for work.
His family in a statement following his death extended their gratitude to those who offered support and encouragement and asked the public to understand their need for privacy.
"Following the demise of our beloved Sean, we, the family, are humbled by the outpouring of love, words of encouragement, and willingness to assist with Sean’s arrangements. There will be a private family send-off in the week. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy," the statement read.
Cardovillis' body was cremated on 14 September at a private family function.
5. Muthoni Wa Kirima
Field Marshal Muthoni wa Kirima died on 5 September after being rushed to Radiant Hospital in Pangani.
The freedom fighter was mourned by several leaders including President Ruto, DP Gachagua, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta.
“I cherish the memory and joy that we, Field Marshall Muthoni wa Kirima and myself and others, met in the recent past and shared many stories together.
“I thank God for the privilege and honor to have known and shared the very challenging difficult period in our country during the colonial government, together with many others, including Field Marshall Muthoni wa Kirima, nyina wa thonjo,” Mama Ngina stated.
Muthoni wa Kirima was buried on September 2022 in Tetu, Nyeri County.
