The Employment and Labour Relations Court issued an order on Wednesday protecting the clinicians from harassment and intimidation from the county governments. 


The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) on Wednesday, May 15, announced a nationwide strike.

In a statement, KUCO asserted that the strike was protected by the court, maintaining that it was going to withdraw all its officers from public hospitals.  

"Our strike is protected, the court buttressed this by protecting our members from harassment or disciplinary processes by the 47 Counties and Ministry of Health. Meanwhile, we are withdrawing all Clinical Officers from @MOH_Kenya facilities from midnight today," read the statement.

"Pending amicable negotiations and resolution of dispute the respondents (county governments) by themselves, their agencies, officers or agents are hereby prohibited from harassing, intimidating, punishing or initiating or continuing disciplinary process against union members on account of raising the grievances in dispute, and any proceedings in that regard are hereby stayed," the court directed.

The clinical officers have been rooting for the implementation of their 2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Their nationwide strike comes barely a week after the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) called off a 56-day doctors' strike after signing a return to work formula with the government.
